A Legacy of Growth and Resilience

In the heart of Middletown, Delaware, a vision of brotherhood and perseverance took shape in 1894 with the founding of Stone Square Lodge No. 22. The early members, driven by a commitment to unity and service, first gathered in the historic Rhoades House at the corner of Lake Street and Jefferson. For decades, this space was a cornerstone for fellowship and Masonic traditions. However, change was inevitable. In 1955, as the town expanded and the Louis L. Redding Comprehensive High School was established, the Lodge was called upon to vacate its home, prompting a new chapter in its journey. Determined to continue their mission, the members contacted various churches within the community, seeking a place to gather. Mount Calvary Baptist Church, located at 300 New Street, welcomed them with open arms. Within those sacred walls, the Lodge found more than just a meeting place—it found a partnership rooted in faith and shared purpose. The members contributed to the maintenance of the church, ensuring that both the Lodge and the congregation flourished together. This period of growth and collaboration strengthened their ties to the local faith community, a relationship that remains cherished to this day. As the Lodge continued to thrive, so did its vision for the future. By the early 1990s, the brethren recognized the need for a permanent home, a place they could call their own. Under Worshipful Master Randolph Reed, Senior Warden Abram Watson, Junior Warden Clarence Saunders, Treasurer Walter Boardly Jr., and Acting Secretary Brother William Saunders, the Lodge took a bold step forward. In 1994, Senior Warden Watson and his wife secured a property at 208 East Lake Street in Middletown—a modest space full of promise. With the dedication and unity that defined Stone Square Lodge, the members transformed the property into a fitting sanctuary for their meetings and Masonic work. The process was not without its challenges. Renovations required time, effort, and unyielding perseverance. But the spirit of fraternity shone brightly as members volunteered their skills and labor, determined to see their vision come to life. Every wall built and every fixture installed was a testament to their unwavering commitment. By late fall of 1995, the Lodge was ready to step into its new era. A momentous day arrived in February of 1996. Under the watchful eyes of the Grand Lodge, visiting brethren, and the proud members of Stone Square Lodge No. 22, a procession formed at the corner of East Lake Street and 300 New Street. They marched westward with unity in their stride, a symbol of resilience and progress. The Dedication Ceremony, led by Most Worshipful Past Grand Master Marvin I. Gray, was a defining moment—a celebration of perseverance, brotherhood, and the relentless pursuit of growth. With a new home established, the Lodge expanded its impact on the community. In 1998, Stone Square Lodge No. 22 awarded its first scholarship to a deserving student at Middletown High School, a commitment to education that would only grow stronger in the years to come. Recognizing the need for sustainable fundraising, the Lodge introduced annual events, including a Christmas Bazaar and Auction Fundraiser, ensuring that future generations would benefit from its generosity. Soon after, the Lodge expanded its efforts, partnering with other organizations to host the Penn Relay Youth and Adult trip, creating community engagement and mentorship opportunities. By 2003, under the leadership of Worshipful Master Ernest Saunders, the Lodge reached a remarkable milestone—full ownership of its property. What began as a vision fueled by faith and determination had become a reality, securing a lasting legacy for generations. Today, Stone Square Lodge No. 22 stands as a building and a beacon of resilience, growth, and unwavering brotherhood. Its journey is a testament to the strength found in unity, the importance of honoring the past, and the boundless potential of those who dare to dream. As the Lodge continues forward, it carries the values instilled over a century ago—service, integrity, and an enduring commitment to the community that helped shape its path. The story of Stone Square Lodge No. 22 is far from over. It is a living history, a testament to perseverance, and a legacy that will inspire future generations.
